The Walking Dead finally returned to the air on Sunday night for an emotional episode that said goodbye to a lead character.
The expanded episode secured 8.3 million viewers and a 3.6 rating among adults 18-49.
That figure is up marginally vs The Walking Dead Season 8's premiere, but it was disappointing considering it was such a highly promoted episode.

In addition, these figures also represent the show's lowest-rated midseason launch to date.
Have a look at the other midseason launches to see the results over the years:
- The Walking Dead Season 2 - 8.1 million viewers and a 4.2 rating.
- The Walking Dead Season 3 - 12.3 million viewers and a 6.1 rating.
- The Walking Dead Season 4 - 15.8 million viewers and a 8.2 rating.
- The Walking Dead Season 5 - 15.6 million viewers and a 8.0 rating.
- The Walking Dead Season 6 - 13.7 million viewers and a 6.8 rating.
- The Walking Dead Season 7 - 12 million viewers and a 5.7 rating.
The show is slipping in the ratings, but it is still a hit.
Meanwhile, UnREAL returned to Lifetime on Monday night with just 252,000 viewers and a 0.08 rating among adults 18-49.

That's a weak result, but the show is already renewed for Season 4, so fans should enjoy it while it lasts. It's not going to survive much longer with such woeful ratings.
Homeland is proving that it may be time to bring the show to a close. The latest episode secured 1.3 million viewers and a 0.3 rating in the demo.
