The Librarians Review: Changes are Coming

What's the sense of having a Book of Librarians if you don't mine it for storylines?

We got to meet Flynn's idol on The Librarians Season 4 Episode 5.

The Former Librarian - The Librarians Season 4 Episode 5

Darrington Dare was an intriguing character, and I could see how Sir Arthur Conan Doyle could have based his character Sherlock Holmes on Dare.

Dare exhibited Holmes' stellar deductive skills. But he was just as much as narcissistic and self-centered as the famed detective.

He also had his own nemesis, Ambrose Gethick, whom he chased 130 years into the future.

It was a hoot to watch Flynn go all fanboy over Dare, who he enthused was the greatest Librarian of all time.

Flynn explained that as a young Librarian, he drew inspiration from the tales of Dare in the Book of Librarians, which is why he knew Dare's life story inside and out.

He continued to learn from Dare in their pursuit of Gethick. Flynn decided that saving his friends was more important than helping Dare defeat his nemesis.

Aging Rapidly - The Librarians Season 4 Episode 5

He also came up with a way to defeat Gethick that was more efficient than a two-on-one duel. Who would have thought of overloading the Bleeding Crown with Jenkins' immortal energies? Certainly not Dare.

Flynn also taught Dare why it's important to have friends. Thanks to Flynn and his friends, Dare didn't die on his 40th birthday but instead went on to live a long life. I feel that changing the history of one Librarian had to affect those that followed, but apparently, that's a story for another day.

One thing that Dare brought up promised to have an impact in the near future. Apparently, the longstanding rule is that there can only be one Librarian at a time.

That came about because the Library once chose two twin brothers as Librarians, and they got into a war over who should be The Librarian. That somehow cut off the earth's ties to the Library, which caused humanity to fall into a dark period without access to knowledge.

The Library has four Librarians now because of special circumstances, Flynn explained. Dare continued to push Flynn to get rid of the three, for lack of a better term, junior Librarians, who chafed at being called his assistants. That's what they are, isn't it?

There is discontent appearing among the Librarians, so who is to say a greater conflict isn't possible? This isn't the end of this storyline.

In fact, it continued, in a way, on The Librarians Season 4 Episode 6.

Guardian Decision - The Librarians Season 4 Episode 6

After being distracted for a while, the Librarians went after Nicole Noone, the former Guardian who disappeared after helping them on The Librarians Season 4 Episode 1.

Eve tracked down Nicole to try to convince her to return to the Library. After having been imprisoned there for a century, Nicole wasn't terribly keen on that idea.

Bringing back Nicole wasn't Eve's only motivation. It was clear that she wasn't sold on the idea of tethering to the Library and becoming immortal. And listening to Nicole describe how she outlived so many of her loved ones wasn't convincing Eve either.

So naturally, since Nicole wasn't budging, Eve tagged along on her mission to find Kosche's Needle, hoping to win her over and learn more about what being a Guardian has entailed through the centuries.

The two were a perfect pairing, a couple of strong women who could hold their own against any men. If only they could trust each other since that's what ended up getting them both in trouble.

The Rift - The Librarians

In fact, no one other than Flynn had blind faith in Nicole. Having Flynn, Jenkins, Nicole, and Eve arguing all the time got old, and it allowed Rasputin to get ahold of the Needle and stab Nicole, draining her of her life energy.

It was big of Jenkins to admit the error of his ways, giving up his immortality to save Nicole. Based on his talk with Flynn, it seems like immortality was as much a curse as a blessing. It will be interesting to see how Jenkins handles being mortal again.

Nicole, Dare, and even Jenkins certainly got into Flynn's head. It's understandable that he would have doubts, mainly because of how the Library treated Nicole. But it still seems out of character that he would go on a walkabout without telling anyone, especially Eve. She deserved better, and it is certainly going to affect her as well.

Is it a short-term thing, since Flynn has mostly been a recurring, not full-time, character? Probably. It gives the others a chance to shine, which is not a bad thing.

But the tethering ceremony has to happen within the next 41 days, which creates a sense of urgency even if many viewers, including me, don't necessarily understand it. Will Flynn be back, which would be logical? Or will one of the other three get elevated to "head" Librarian?

Maybe we need to watch The Librarians online to comprehend the fine details.

Did you anticipate Flynn taking off? Will he pursue Nicole? What happens with those who remain? Comment below.
